How To's

Adding Borders

I have the best luck and have avoided those pesky ruffles when I spread the top on a table and lay the border on the edge having right sides together.

This all happens when you have a top that is flat when pressed!

Borders should lay flat and square with the pieced top.

There are several books with "how to's" for putting on borders.

This is what I do…

  1. I lay an edge of the top flat on a table as straight as I can and flat as I can. Then I place the border piece right side down on the edge of the quilt. Note: I leave about an ince of the border at the beginning and an inch at the end of this edge each time I place a border. I don't know why except it does give me enough to trim and keep the next two edges straight.
  2. Pin in place about every three inches.
  3. I then turn the quilt and pin the border to the opposite side in the same manner.
  4. Go to the sewing machine and stich with a ¼ inch seam.
  5. Press with the seam allowance going away from the center of the quilt.
  6. Trim the ends even with the opposite edge of the quilt.
Repeat for the other two sides.
